About Me

Hey there! Welcome to Straying Trails. My name’s David. I’m an undergrad zoology student, naturalist and science communicator. Over the years, my interest in nature and the outdoors has grown from baby me flipping through my aunt’s old books to studying a zoology course in Cornwall: one of England’s best counties for biodiversity.

When I moved from Portugal with my parents to live here in the UK, some of my earliest memories were of being in the great outdoors. I used to spend a lot of time around trees when going to parks. Mostly falling off them. Now as a grown man, I’m lucky (and unlucky) enough to go on even more wild adventures. From braving through bramble to being mugged by gulls.

About the Blog

That’s enough about me. I should explain this website. I started this in the summer of 2025. Not only as a way to connect myself with nature, but also with all of you guys reading. To help build that bridge between us. Because that’s what science communication is all about. You can’t help people connect to a topic if you can’t bring them together.

Straying Trails isn’t just for us to learn about the plants and critters I meet. It’s for us to talk about our experiences and knowledge. This isn’t one of those blogs where I’m the guy who writes stuff and you’re the one who reads it. Everyone here is free to share their piece. So let me know your suggestions, leave a comment, or even write a guest post for the blog. Stay straying!
